Halloween is a holiday that often times brings thrills and frights to many young people. One thing teenagers tend to overlook is their safety. Students feel invincible and mainly think about the fun that they’re having or the fun that they plan to have.
One great tip to follow when staying safe on such a fun-filled night would be to stay with a buddy. If students use the buddy system less crimes will be committed and parents can stay stress free knowing their child is safe. Vice Principal Mr. Bowens said, “Walk in groups, go trick-or-treating early, stay in lighted areas, and check products before eating it [to stay safe].” Students should also always make sure they have a plan in case something was to happen.
Cell phones can contribute to safety in many ways. Having a quick and easy way to contact someone when needed is a great way to keep parents at ease and teens happy. Junior Cici Brewer said, “If something happens, you can call 911.” Cell phones help many students reach emergency contacts when in a dangerous situation.
Many students walk around town trick-or-treating. A good way to keep safe is by staying in a familiar area. The more you know and recognize your surroundings, the better. Vice Principal Mrs. Kim McGlohon said, “High school students should not trick-or-treat. They are too old and should just have small parties with cookies and punch.” This could be a better option for many students.
Carrying a decorative candy bag is a tradition for many trick-or-treaters, but having a flashlight in hand is also one great way to ensure safety. With a flashlight, trick-or-treaters do not have to worry about not being seen.
Costumes are a major part of this festive holiday. However, costumes can be a hazard to health if they are on for too long. Students that trip over their own outfits can be injured badly. In order to keep out of harm’s way, make sure to purchase or have an outfit that fits correctly.
This Halloween could be a night to remember as long as students have fun while staying safe. With all of the chaos, it may seem difficult but if students keep these main tips in mind, safety will not be an issue. Safety plays a large role in having a great time on one of the most enjoyable nights of the year.
