As most students know, Cape Coral High School offers many clubs like National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National French Honor Society, SADD, Key Club, and the list goes on and on. What many do not know is that this year, Cape High is bringing back one of its oldest and most recognized clubs, the Quill and Scroll Honor Society.
The Quill and Scroll Honor Society is an organization, originally designed by a group of high school advisors in1926. The goal of the organization was to encourage students grow to full potential in areas of journalism and scholastic publication, as well as to give recognition to exceptional writers. Quill and Scroll charters have been granted to over 14,000 high schools in all 50 states as well as to 44 foreign countries around the world.
According to Cape Coral Chapter Quill and Scroll supervisor Aaron Smoly, there are two major benefits for students looking to join the club. “Number one, it looks great on college applications. Number two, students will hopefully become better journalists. This is our mission, to make Cape Coral High School the writing school of Cape Coral.”
Each school is considered its own chapter. Each chapter is specifically designed to showcase the school’s strengths within the journalism/productions program. “The Quill and Scroll honor society is remnant of NHS,” said Smoly. “However, it is only for journalists and it does its best to give students more opportunities for college. I am excited about [Quill and Scroll’s] return to Cape High. It is a good thing overall. Quill and Scroll was very prominent here in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. However, over time, it got lost in the shuffle. We have a lifetime membership. We might as well make use of it,”
The Quill and Scroll club participates in many activities intended to express the dexterity of the group. The major chapter activities include International Writing and Photo Contest, Yearbook Excellence Contest, and News Media Evaluation. Quill and Scroll has no requirements as to the activities of local chapters. “These activities really encourage students, who are looking to go into mass communications, journalism, broadcasting, or anything in that category, to really exemplify their positions in that area of communications,” said Cape Coral Chapter Quill and Scroll president, Joel Silverberg.
Students who join Quill and Scroll Honor Society will get an extra chord for graduation. “Being part of Quill and Scroll looks really good on college applications. Quill and Scroll is affiliated with the University of Iowa and they have a really good journalism program. This is phenomenal for students that want to go into media,” said Silverberg.
Membership is open to all students of junior or senior class. Each applicant must be in the top third of their class in general scholastic standing and must have done superior work in one or more area of journalism or school publications. Recommendation as well as approval by the governing supervisor and the Society’s Executive Director is necessary. The Quill and Scroll Honor Society meets the first Tuesday of every month in Smoly’s room, room 159.
