Homecoming is perhaps a key ingredient when one thinks of typical high school social life. It is generally remembered mostly for the crazy outfits, fun football games, and great dances; this year was no exception.
Homecoming at Cape Coral High School started on Monday October 5th with Character Day. Though the halls were not decorated as they had been previous years, there was not a lack of decoration among the student body. It seemed as if everyone was dressed up as something, ranging from lumberjacks to Amy Winehouse. Junior Desiree Goenaga, who dressed up as a nerd, said, “My favorite dress up day was definitely character day because it left people to use their imaginations and dress up as anything they wanted.”
Character Day was followed by the exotic Safari Day. The halls were packed with wolves, lions, animal attack victims, and even a few jeeps for safari expeditions. Junior Dominic John said, “I thought Safari day was definitely an 'Adventure'.”
Also on Tuesday, the powder-puff game was held. The sophomores beat the freshmen, while the juniors went undefeated for a third year against the seniors. During halftime, the seniors and juniors boy cheerleaders both presented their dance skills on the fifty yard line in a very entertaining way. Though the senior girls lost their game, the senior boys took home a win with their dancing, striped tights, and tie dyed v-necks.
Wednesday was Feudal Day in which the seniors were kings and queens; the juniors were knights and damsels in distress; the sophomores were the class clowns as court jesters; and the freshmen were the peasants of the student body. Many seniors sported crowns while juniors went all out with armor and swords (which were quickly confiscated by the administration). A few sophomores wore jester's hats while it seemed not very many freshmen went all out. Junior Sara Campion commented on the difficultly of Feudal Day by saying, “I think it was a good idea, but it seemed that it was more difficult to dress up for most classes.”
October 8th was Class Theme day and the day of the annual parade. Each class dressed up as its respective musical from Broadway which was this years Homecoming theme. The seniors were imaginative with The Wizard of Oz; the juniors got silly with Dr. Seuss themed Seussical, the sophomores went retro with Grease; and the freshmen added a bit of magic to everything with Mary Poppins. Each float looked wonderful during the parade. All had their own sense of style and creativity, with different props representing the musical they were involved in.
Friday was, of course, spirit day. The halls were a blur of orange and blue as the students got ready for an exciting game and dance. The pep rally was a huge success. The senior powder-puff boys presented an encore of their well received dance and Staff homecoming court was chosen with Mr. Cook and Mr. Hughes as the kings and Mrs.Wildeman and Mrs.Propert as the queens. The seniors and juniors battled it out for the spirit stick, with the seniors ultimately triumphing.
Senior Seth Sutton, who cheered on the boys’ powder-puff team, said, “[The pep rally] was a blast. The best part was the senior powder-puff cheerleaders.”
Later that night, the Seahawks went head-to-head with Palmetto Ridge ending the game with a win of 24-14, putting their record at 5-0 this year. During halftime, the results of homecoming court were announced: Kylee Shirakawa for Queen and Spencer Boyd for King. Shirakawa said, “I'm in complete shock; I didn't think I stood a chance, but I'm extremely excited!”
The last day of homecoming was the actual dance. On the day of the dance, volunteers helped set up the school hallways using parts from everyone’s float to fit the Broadway theme. There seemed to be mixed feelings about the dance, with some good reports and others, not so good. Sutton said, “The dance was not so good.”
While Junior Kristen Mori said, “The dance was so much fun. The music was so much better this year. There was a lot more to dance to.”
All in all, Homecoming week was a huge success. Junior Meli Tremblay described a feeling of joy and happiness with the turn out, “This was my first homecoming, and it was not a disappointing first impression,”
