Summer “To Do” List for Juniors

1. FINALIZE YOUR “NARROWED DOWN” COLLEGE LIST

♦ Research and select your own schools.
♦ Your friends’ plans should NOT influence your plans.
♦ Balance your list with reaches, targets, and safeties
♦ Visit college campuses and interview when possible

2. CREATE AN ORGANIZED CALENDAR OF FALL EVENTS

♦ College open houses, information sessions, interviews
♦ Sports/activities calendar
♦ Dates for remaining SAT or ACT tests
♦ SAT dates:  www.collegeboard.com
♦ ACT dates: www.actstudent.org
♦ Talk with parents regarding schedule of events
♦ BE AWARE OF APPLICATION DEADLINES!!

3. MAKE SURE YOUR ACTIVITY RESUME IS UPDATED

♦ All activities grades 9-12; positions of leadership/awards; community service hours
♦ This is helpful for your applications, counselor/teacher recommendations, and scholarship applications

4. WORK ON YOUR ESSAYS OVER THE SUMMER (Each school has slightly different topics.)

♦ Collect your applications and essay questions
♦ Keep a journal of ideas for essay questions
♦ Write application essays over the summer
♦ Return to school in August with some essays ready for your English teacher to assess
♦ You will be so happy next fall if you write your essays over the summer—Whew!  Pressure’s off!

5. COMPLETE COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS DURING SUMMER TIME OFF FROM SCHOOL!

6. BEGIN RESEARCHING SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
